Makabu vs Mchunu this weekend

Recommended Posts

So, the time has finally come. We shall see who the better man is of these two very promising African cruisers. Who is your money on? I got Makabu by a late stoppage. I think Mchunu shows promise but hasn't yet really defeated anyone of note. That was prime anyway. Makabu on other hand defeated the promising Ukrainian Dmitro Kucher, who was unbeaten and also a strong specimen. Makabu is a force of nature. Edited by BoztheMadman

Re: Makabu vs Mchunu this weekend

Boz, you beat me to it. This is one of the most exciting fights of the year, in arguably the deepest division in the sport, with two agrressive fighters that have completely different styles.

- And almost no one even knows about it. I don't even think it's being televised in the US at all.

FWIW, I'm rooting for the little guy. Mchunu is absolutely amazing. IMO he's the best P4P fighter in the sport. - But I expect a robbery decision for dangerous-but-slow Makabu. More later, as I'm at work right now.

Can't find any. :( Maybe the fight has already finished? What time is it in SA right now??

Fight underway now. Don't know how it's going or whether just finished. A few of us been looking and can't find a stream for Super Sports 9.

Hopefully, get a vid in a few hours or tomorrow. Gutted.

Re: Makabu vs Mchunu this weekend

I've been reading updates on this fight. I couldn't find a stream, but also couldn't help but keep up to date on this fascinating Crusierweight match-up. It just ended 15-20 minutes ago, and... what a result.

Spoiler!

Mchunu was doing most of the work in the early rounds, landing with his usual sharpness and precision. He was ahead on the WBC's open scoring in round four and round eight, but began to tire in the middle, and even more so in the later rounds. Seeing that, Makabu rallied, pushing harder than ever, while Mchunu continued to fade and lower his output in rounds nine and ten. In round eleven, the scorecards had presumably narrowed but Makabu wasn't leaving it up to chance. A left uppercut followed by a chopping left hand iced Mchunu, and left Makabu standing tall as the upset victor.

Round 4 scorecards: 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 (all Mchunu)

Round 8 scorecards: 78-75, 77-75, 77-76 (all Mchunu)

Spoiler!

So, uh... We're waiting, YouTube!

Well.. the best P4P fighter in the sport might Mini Spoiler Alert have some stamina issues. He has shown some tremendous qualities but needs to look over this fight and see what he can do to improve. Or else, he won't even get to a world title.

Makabu isn't the kind of guy who makes it easy on you for twelve rounds. If you let your foot of the gas or simply get tired, you're going to taste some heavy leather. And it's not too much different than, say, Marco Huck or Denis Lebedev. I think Makabu has better punching power than both, but they too will win or lose in a twelve round fight, and both can knock you out if you aren't prepared for a long night. This result could be a sign that Thabiso still has a ways to go if he wants to be one of the best at Crusierweight. He's 27, and that's the perfect age to brush up, and see what you're made of. It's not over for him but this is obviously a setback. Like I said, he has all the qualities but there's room for improvement in some areas.

Well...... I do NOW.

----------

Did anyone see the entire fight? I gave up looking for a stream after about 2 hours of searching.

I only saw a clip of the KO, but Makabu looked seriously impressive. His jab seems to have gotten faster & crisper. He still throws it wile moving forward, which is a great idea, but now he does it with better footwork & balance.

I just GOTTA' see this entire fight.

I agree on all points.

Mchunu has looked almost "lazy" in a few fights, but I attributed that to him simply outclassing his opponents. Now I see the flaw.

Like you say, he will hopefully learn from this bout. Sadly, in the old days a loss like this wouldn't hurt a guy's career too much, but in today's promotion-driven, promoter-disrupted boxing world, this could set Thabiso back several years.

Well, at least Makabu is looking better than ever. I have never been a fan of his in the past, but I just might be after I see this whole fight.

Hehe...I just never saw why Mchunu was so hyped and praised. Maybe because he got a fan-friendly style? Beats me...because, as I said, he didn't yet beat anyone of note. And he beat some second-rate fighters by decision, which is not such a good sign for someone who is not supposed to be devoid of power.

Well, I tend to get a little near-sighted whenever I first spot a young prospect with serious potential.

Call me foolish, but I'd rather be passionate & wrong once in a while, than conservative & bored. Baxin' is FUN ! :haha:

Hehe...no I won't call you foolish. ;-) I appreciate that. Nothing worse than a conservative, boring guy who is "always" right, haha.

Re: Makabu vs Mchunu this weekend

Makabu is a mean fighter and I think Kucher should continue fighting, because he was the only one who managed to go 12 with him AND gave him a close fight. It's easy to get discouraged after your first defeat, but he just barely lost to such a machine of a fighter. I really would like to see a rematch. I hope Dmytro continues fighting. He's only had one fight since that one so far.

Absolutely. Was there ever word of him retiring? That would be awfully disappointing to have an exciting fighter walk away from the sport because he lost to a special talent. He only would've had worse luck to run into Oleksandr Usyk, but at least then he would've known beforehand that his head was getting handed to him. :haha:

...Seriously, Kucher Vs. Usyk would be the perfect fight for Usyk right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kucher score a knockdown, or at least hurt Oleksandr a couple of times. He tries to be slippery, gets caught with a right hand -- it happens. Usyk's more than ready for it to happen to him. With that said, I fully understand Kucher wanting to build his career back up before a fight of that magnitude. It seems like he's already fought since the Makabu fight (Oct. 2014), so, at 30, I would hope and doubt that this isn't the last we'll hear of him.

Re: Makabu vs Mchunu this weekend

It's geo-blocked, but this is the best trace of the Makabu-Mchunu fight I've found online:

SuperSport - Boxing

If someone could, y'know, take it from there and put it somewhere else where we might be able to get our hands on it... that would be terrific.

We need this fight!
